Bourbon vanilla
Vanilla is an orchid called Tlilxochitl
(to tlili:black, xochitl:husk) by the Aztec.
It is towards be beginning of 1500 that it was discovered by Spanish
(Herman the Cortes).
They gave it the name of Vaynilla (small
pod) then in 1703, the Plumier father gave
him the name of Vanilla.
It was introduced in Europe but none of these orchid gave pods
because it missed an essential element in its fecundation:
endemic bee of Mexico called Melipone.
This bee was able to thread in the corolla of the orchid in order to
deposit pollen on the pistil. During four centuries of the scientists
of the whole world tried without success fecundation and encountered
this enigma.
Vanilla was imported with the Meeting (island bourbon) in
the beginning 1800 by the commander Pierre-Henri
Philiber (on June 26, 1819) and by with the Going
director, at the request of
David of Flowered .
It brought back natural history museum of Paris the
"Vanilla planifolia" (small vanilla). It
will be this species which will succeed best on the meeting. The two
other imported species are the vanilla
pompona and the
tahitensis.
It is in 1841 that a young slave called
Albius discovered the artificial insemination of
vanilla.
When to the explanation of the discovery, some say that it is parcqu'
it had been punished by its Master that it was avenged on the
orchises, which started fecundation; others say that it one was
impassioned of the plants and qui' it worked as garden in a
plantation where it would have learned from its Master the artificial
insemination from citrouilles(Joffiat). He had the idea to fertilize
vanilla by putting in report/ratio the bodies male and female.
In spite of its discovery, it was not entitled to a preferential
treatment thus to abolition of slavery, December 20, 1848 with the
Meeting, it was released like the other slaves without any framing
nor trade. It perishes in misery in 1880 whereas island bourbon grew
rich thanks to vanilla.
Fecundation was not enough to have a good vanilla, it was necessary
to improve the technique to have a very good quality.
It is Ernest Loupy who discovered the
process of the scalding and which applied it, which improved the
outputs and quality.
Once in retirement, David of Flowered, the
same one who brought back vanilla on island, improved the process of
Loupy and wrote one of the first handbook besides on the preparation
of vanilla.
The family field Of Flowered (the house of vanilla with
Saint-Andrew) is still in activity and its production
forms part of best. You can besides visit
the field and know all the manufactoring processes thanks to guides
out-par.
Vanilla forms part of the inheritance of the meeting, it is for that
that it is reproduced on the weapons of the island which were drawn
by the Merwart governor in 1925. It took again the currency of the
company of the Eastern Indies: " florebo quocunque feras
" (I will flower everywhere, where I will be
planted).
What was more valid for vanilla than for the French flag.
